Planning For Emergencies:

We often get complacent and forget or putoff emergency plans that can cover a multitude of situations beyond our control. However, creating a plan, thinking through it, and even practicing the plan to ensure you haven't forgotten anything will help you get through almost any situation you are faced with much better than having no plan.

Protecting yourself and your family will become easier to carry out with a plan - and will help during stressful situations. You'll have a more clear head, with a plan that works and that you have confidence in implementing should the need arise.

Everyone's situation is different but there are some basic things to think about:

• How will you access food?
• Do you have an emergency kit?
• Do you have important information written down on paper? If the power goes out and you haven't had a chance to recharge batteries, you will not be able to access important information you might need.
• Who can you call for the delivery of supplies that you might require?
• Do you and your family have a pre-arranged meeting place in the event of an emergency and you become separated?

There are many resources available on emergency planning and we encourage everyone to peruse them and come up with your personalized emergency plan and practice with your family.

The Province of Ontario's Office of the Solicitor General has provided an online app to help you build your own emergency plan: Emergency Preparedness Action Plan.
