A Drive-Through Wedding?

Most people would think about ordering food or coffee at a drive-through, but this past Friday, September 9, 2022, the Town Of Erin hosted a unique “Drive-Through Wedding” event at the town’s office. No appointment was necessary for any of the couples who wished to be officially married – they only had to show up with a valid wedding licence, issued by any municipality in Ontario, as well as ID.

All the couples could even remain in their car, with a few minutes of official paperwork needing to be completed before they were officially pronounced as married. According to Guelph Today, some attendees thought the event was like a Las Vegas experience.

“We want Elvis!” April Rostron reportedly said during the evening who married Brian Allison. The couple are from Fergus, and according to Guelph Today, “they had tried to get married a few times in the past but Sept. 9, 2022 ended up being their day.”

Headwaters Home Improvement Centre helped out all the couples with a $150.00 gift certificate for every couple that were civilly married at the event.

“We were very excited to be a part of this event,” said Chris Naraysingh, representing Headwaters Home Improvement Centre. “Getting married cost each couple $250.00 we loved being able to help them a bit with their future home improvement, paint, or hardware expenses. We really love being a part of this wonderful community of Erin. It was a great opportunity for us to assist with the Town of Erin’s drive-through marriage event.”

The Orangeville Banner’s Tabitha Wells interviewed Lisa Campion, the Town Of Erin’s Director of Legislative Services and Town Clerk. Apparently Campion had remarked that staff at the Town of Erin had “heard about backlogs being experienced in civil ceremonies in neighbouring communities due to the pandemic.”

This was a big decision in moving forward with a “Drive-Through Wedding” service for those who were frustrated with delays in their plans to get married.
